Photo consent for organizations that feature kids

Every youth photo on your site, cleared or hidden.

Using a child's photo without a parent's consent puts the family and your organization at risk. Permitly pinpoints the photos on your site that could put a child at risk, sets aside the ones that can't, and keeps anything without consent off your public pages. Then it runs consent for every new photo, from the parent's signature to a revocation. It never deletes a file.

Consent protects families, and your organization.

Camps, youth sports, after-school programs, churches and nonprofits run on photos of the kids they serve. The risk of using one without permission is not new, and it is not only in California.

  • Likeness laws everywhereMost states let people sue when their image is used in advertising without consent. A parent can bring that claim for their child.
  • Some kids must not be foundCustody disputes, foster care and safety plans mean some families need their child kept off the internet. A consent record is how your staff knows.
  • Proof when it mattersWhen a parent asks what they agreed to, you can show the exact form, the date, every change, and when a photo came down.
  • Trust that keeps families coming backParents notice when you ask first and keep your word. It is part of running a program families feel safe in.

Ready for California AB 2007

In California, a photo release in the sign-up form no longer covers you.

AB 2007 (Business and Professions Code Section 18985) covers youth programs outside school hours that need a parent's signature: camps, after-school, youth sports, swim lessons and more. A covered program can't use a child's photo, video, voice, likeness or name in marketing unless a parent signed a standalone consent for that use.

If your release lives inside registration or the liability waiver, every youth photo on your public site becomes uncleared on January 1.

Schools are not covered. Material shared only with enrolled families, and not public, is not marketing.
  • Its own documentConsent is its own form or its own page online, never buried in registration or waiver paperwork.
  • Every use spelled outThe notice lists each use (website, social, email, print, video) and the websites where the child may appear.
  • Never a conditionA family can say no and still enroll, and the form has to say so plainly.
  • Revocable by emailParents can revoke at any time during enrollment and up to a year after the child leaves.
  • Stop new use after a revocationFrom then on, no new use of that child. Items already published or printed don't have to be pulled.
  • Never soldA youth's information can't be sold, even with consent.

Two problems, not one.

Most organizations have years of photos spread across hundreds of pages, menus, sliders and headers. And new photos go up every week. Consent has to cover both.

The backlog

images nobody has reviewed, in a typical library of 1,240 live photos.

  • Photos in page content, galleries and builder layouts
  • Background images, sliders, logos and headers
  • Widgets, menus and site-wide templates

Every new upload

uncleared photos that should reach a public page once Permitly is on.

  • Staff tag who is in the photo at upload
  • The media picker only offers cleared images
  • A revocation hides that child's photos right away
Start with the photos already on your site

Find the photos that need fixing. Skip the ones that don't.

The hardest part of photo consent is the backlog: years of images across hundreds of pages. Permitly pinpoints the ones that could put a child at risk and moves everything else out of the way, so your team spends an afternoon on what matters instead of weeks scrolling a media library.

  1. 369images in the media library
  2. 335after 34 logos, icons and graphics were sorted out automatically
  3. 87that visitors actually see. 248 aren't on any page, so they wait until someone uses them.
  4. 57for a person to look at, after the AI people check set aside 30 with no people in them

About 85% fewer images to review. Real results from one WordPress site on its first run. Your numbers will be different.

  1. Pinpoint

Finds every image your visitors can see, in page content, page builders, sliders, backgrounds, menus, widgets and templates, and shows which pages each one is on. The most-seen go first.

  2. Set aside

Images not used on any page and graphics step out of the way on their own. With Pro, the AI people check sets aside every photo with no people in it. It never identifies anyone or guesses ages, and anything can go back with one tap.

  3. Fix fast

Quick sort shows one photo at a time with big buttons, so a person decides in a second or two. Tag the children whose parents said yes, or swap in a cleared photo with one tap until consent comes in.

Then it runs your consent program, every day.

Once the backlog is clear, the same plugin keeps it that way: a parent consent form in 18 languages that fills your registry, every photo linked to the children in it, and a revocation that takes a child's photos down at once, with a dated record of all of it.

See everything it does

How it works

Every image starts uncleared until each child in it has consent for that exact use. That makes the safe state the default.

  1. Scan

Finds every image your visitors can see, including backgrounds, sliders, widgets, menus and templates, and counts how many are live.

  2. Review

Only the images that could be a problem, most-seen first. One tap for no people, adults only or kids not identifiable. Tag the children in the rest from a simple registry.

  3. Enforce

Start on test pages in watch-only mode. When you turn on the whole site, you see exactly what will be hidden and confirm.

  4. Revoke

Record a revocation and every photo of that child leaves your public pages at once, with a dated log.

Never deletes, moves or edits an image, post or page. Pausing the plugin restores your site instantly.
A nightly check with a circuit breaker: if a sudden share of live images would disappear, it switches itself to watch-only and emails you.
Preview any page as visitors would see it before anything changes.

Free does the protecting. Pro gets the work done.

The free plugin is complete on its own, with no limits and no locked buttons. Pro is for organizations that collect consent at scale, run more than one site, or have a big library to clean up.

Questions

Does the free plugin limit anything?

No. Everything in the free plugin works without limits, on as many sites as you like. Pro adds separate tools for collecting consent, handling revocations and cleaning up large libraries.

How are children counted on Pro plans?

Every child with a record in your consent registry counts, including children who have left your programs, because their photos and consent still need managing. When you reach your plan's limit, nothing changes for 14 days. After that, Pro staff tools like bulk tagging and roster import pause until you upgrade. Hiding photos, the parent form, revocations and exports always keep working.

We already have thousands of photos. How long will this take?

Far less than you think. Permitly only shows images on your website that still need an answer, and sorts graphics out on its own. With Pro, the optional people check uses AI to set aside every image with no people in it, like logos, buildings and equipment, without identifying anyone or guessing ages. Your team then answers the photos with people one at a time in Quick sort, a second or two each, and tags the children only where it matters.

Will it hide photos on my site the moment I install it?

No. A new install starts in watch-only mode on test pages only, so visitors see no change. You choose when to turn it on for the whole site, and you see the exact count first.

What happens to photos nobody has reviewed yet?

With the strictest setting, they are hidden until someone reviews them. While review is in progress you can choose to hide only confirmed problems (blocked, out of scope or revoked) so the site doesn't go blank. Whether that is acceptable is your organization's legal decision.

Does it delete or change my images?

Never. Hidden images are swapped for a placeholder (the gray box or your own image) as the page is sent to visitors. With Pro, Swap photo shows a cleared stand-in of your choice instead, until the original is cleared. The file, the post and the page stay exactly as they are, and pausing the plugin restores everything.

Where does it look for photos?

Page and post content, featured images, galleries, CSS background images, images added by URL, page builders like Elementor, widgets, menus, the logo and other theme settings, block templates, synced patterns and common sliders.

Do we still need a consent form if we use Pro?

Yes, the law requires standalone consent. Pro includes a standalone form you can put on any page, and it fills the registry for you. Have your counsel approve the wording.

What about social media, email and print?

Permitly controls your website. For other channels, it records where each photo was used, and Pro opens a dated checklist when a parent revokes so nobody reuses that child's photos.

Is this only for California?

No. Any organization that features children in its marketing needs parents' consent, and most states let people sue over an image used without it. Permitly is ready for California AB 2007, in effect January 1, 2027, and works the same way anywhere.

Is this legal advice?

No. Permitly helps you manage consent and keep uncleared photos off your site. Your counsel decides your policies and form wording.
